The MacBook Pro is not my first choice as a computer for dealing with an entire semester of photo-editing homework… Color is not precise, screen calibration is not the best, if it can be done at all.
You want a computer at home or on your own desk, wherever that is, with a dedicated monitor that is all monitor and without a computer inside the monitor.
I opted for the dedicated workhorse, the 8-core dual processor, Mac Pro, for which I can add memory as my need for all of the graphics softwfare increases… I was lucky to get it with OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard which has drivers for the hardware I am using right now. My notebook is the MacBook Pro but loaded with the newer OS X 10.7.x Lion so the dock looks different and the touch pad works differently than with the earlier operating suystem.
